Mid-July 2025 will mark the historic gathering of the notation and movement analysis communities at The Ohio State University. The 34th Biennial Conference of the International Council of Kinetography Laban/Labanotation conference kicks off this event, with sessions running Monday, July 14–Friday, July 18 (arrival Sunday July 13). The inaugural Conference on Laban Bartenieff Movement Studies (LBMS), organized by the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (LIMS) follows, beginning on Friday, July 18 thru Sunday, July 20.

Learning Notation

The Dance Notation Bureau hosted the Advanced Labanotation Course Session 1 from 1 July 2024 to 26 July 2024. This is the second time the DNB has offered this advanced course through ZOOM. Our exceptional team of instructors from the USA and France are Marion Bastien, Julie Brodie, Siân Ferguson, Pascale Guénon, Leslie Rotman and Noëlle Simonet. Our students came from all over the world, including the USA, Greece, Thailand and China, bringing a wide range of perspectives and enthusiasm to the course. This session was a great success with returning and new students diving into the depths of Labanotation/Kinetography Laban theory and practice. The tutors provided engaging theoretical insights and practical reading examples, making the course both educational and enjoyable. Sessions 2 and 3 will be offered next winter and summer.

Espacio Laban in Mexico and the Dance Notation Bureau have come together again for the fourth time to offer the Elementary Labanotation Course as part of their continuous effort to bring the foundational study of Labanotation to the dance community in Mexico. Mei-Chen Lu instructs the course in English, with Spanish translation provided by Miriam Huberman to ensure accessibility for all participants. The course is specifically designed for college teachers, students, and dance professionals in Mexico, providing an exceptional opportunity to deepen their understanding of Labanotation and its applications. Participants will gain invaluable skills for documenting, analyzing, and preserving traditional and contemporary dance forms. So far 8 Mexican students have been certified by the Dance Notation Bureau.

For the first year, Compagnie Labkine has set up online international training courses in kinetography for beginners and advanced students. Three different programmes are on offer: E-Learning Kinetography for beginners; Improve Kinetography for learners wishing to deepen their knowledge; and One to One Kinetography provides support for projects involving movement analysis and notation. Noëlle Simonet and Aurélie Berland taught the first session of Online Kinetography training programme. The first students passed level 1 at the end of this first session. A Level 2 session will begin in January 2025 and a new E-Learning programme level 1 session is scheduled for October 2024.

The Warsaw Studio of Kinetography (Warszawskiej Pracowni Kinetograficzne) has organized the following educational events in 2023/2024. Ten self-education and research sessions as part of the "Open Studio" module offer support for creative environments with "Teatr Komuna Warszawa - Social Cultural Institution", co-financed by the City of Warsaw. Five internal WPK self-education and research sessions online. Five online sessions as part of the collaboration of ICKL group members with Envol des Signes, Association nationale des notateurs du mouvement (France).

From 24 to 28 June, six members of the Centre national d'écriture du mouvement en cinétographie Laban (CNEM), all graduates of the four-year programme at the Conservatoire de Paris, met at the CCNT, the dance centre that hosted the 2015 ICKL conference. They came together to share their knowledge and practice of multiple supports and floor work. The aim of these regular meetings is to maintain and improve their knowledge of kinetography.

From individuals in France:
In 2023 and 2024, Raphaël Cottin led a week-long introductory course in Laban tools at the conservatoire in La Rochelle, a Laban master class at the conservatoire in Reims. A conference at the Chartres theater is scheduled for December 2024.
Aurélie Berland teaches kinetography Laban and choreographic culture at 1st and 14th districts conservatories in Paris, as well as at the University of Strasbourg.
Alice Boivin and Thais Weishaupt teach movement notation in Lyon. This fall, both will be conducting research into notation in Lyon with other alumni from Conservatoire: Anne Sudrie-Lalanne, Karine Boudier, Sophia Cardonna Pera and Camille Chaigne.
Joo (Jooyoung Lee) has been invited as a dance artist and instructor to the educational dance project "360 degrees" at Centre national de la danse, and she is using the principles of Laban notation for her educational work on K-pop dance and traditional Korean dance.

Notating Scores

In 2024, the Centre national de la danse (France) grant programme "Aide à la recherche et au patrimoine en danse" selected Amandine Bajou's project to notate Structure Souffle (2021), choreographed by Myriam Gourfink.
Two other pieces by Myriam Gourfink (Almasty, 2015, and Amas, 2017) have already been notated by Amandine Bajou with a grant from the CND. One of them is available online in its full version:

Raphaël Cottin is currently working on the notation of Another look at memory (2017), a one-hour quartet by the French choreographer Thomas Lebrun: he has currently completed 120 pages of the score out of an estimated total of 350. He is also notating Quel est ce visage ? (2001), an 11-minute solo by the French choreographer Christine Gérard.

With her company Gramma-, Aurélie Berland is notating and reconstructing a 30-minute quartet by Christine Gérard, Automnales, created in 1986 as a tribute to Mary Wigman. This reconstruction will be presented on 26 January 2025 at the Faits d'Hiver Festival in Paris. Filmmaker Benjamin Silvestre is documenting the process for a film.

Staging from Scores

At the Hungarian Dance University part of the final exam for BA students is to demonstrate their dancing skills on stage. For this stage performance of the folk dance specialization, kinetography teachers János Fügedi and Nóra Oláh have introduced a student project assignment to reconstruct a notated choreography. The teachers chose the choreography from a selection of works published in the 1960s and 1970s by artists who were defining figures of their time, such as Miklós Rábai, István Molnár, and Sándor Timár. One of the criteria for the selection was that the work should not be recorded on film or video, but only in notation. According to the Hungarian publishing practice of the time, only the motifs of the choreographies were notated in kinetograms, the dance sequence (i.e., the order of the motifs) was written in text, and the floor plans were listed separately. This year, the students divided into project groups of two or three and were given one choreographic section per group to reconstruct Miklós Rábai’s work entitled Szatmári táncok (Dances of Szatmár), notated by Mária Szentpál.

Last May, Aurélie Berland reconstructed Temple of Alwin Nikolais on the basis of the DNB score with youngsters from a district conservatory in Paris.

Alice Boivin notated an excerpt from Maguy Marin's seminal piece May B (1981) for her graduation at Conservatoire de Paris. In 2024, with Isabelle Missal, a dancer in the Maguy Marin’ company, she used this score to reconstruct part of the piece for an amateur group (as part of the Danse en amateur et répertoire programme run by Centre national de la danse).

Publications

In April, Valerie Preston-Dunlop’s Looking at Dances. A Choreological Perspective on Choreography was translated and published in Mexico. Miriam Huberman translated the book and its title in Spanish is Una mirada a la danza. La coreografia vista desde una perspectiva coreológica. The coeditors are Bonilla Artigas Editores, Universidad Veracruzana, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California and Espacio Laban.

Cassia Sakarovitch, in collaboration with Raymundo Ruiz González, completed her 105 minutes documentary titled Ann Hutchinson Guest, a life in notation, in 2024. It will be presented to the ICKL community, possibly during the next conference in the USA.

Creation and Notation

Hanna Raszewska-Kursa from the Warsaw Laboratory of Kinetography received a grant from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in January 2024. As part of the grant, Hanna developed a project at the intersection of fantasy literature, choreography and academic analysis. One of the main tools of her work is kinetography. She created over 30 movement phrases that she called "choreographical metaphors" and notated them in kinetography scores. WLoK members tested the movement compositions Hanna created through consulting her scores.

For the creative process of her forthcoming dance piece, Game, Léa Bonnaud-Deborde will be trying out the experimental board game called Cinétomino, which uses Laban signs.

Joo (Jooyoung Lee) is currently creating a contemporary dance piece entitled Sooum - The Beginning of Everything, inspired by movements from Korean classical dance. This choreography incorporates research into the relationship between movement and breathing that was conducted during the ICKL workshop in 2023.

Raphaël Cottin will create a piece for young audiences based on the fundamentals of Rudolf Laban in 2025.

Other News

Espacio Laban has received a one-year grant from the Sistema de Apoyo a la Creación y Proyectos Culturales to conduct a full choreological study on three Paixtles dances from Tuxpan, Jalisco. The study, the first of its kind in Mexico, will include an ethnographic analysis, Labanotation and musical scores, videos and a structural analysis. The title of the project is La caravana, la culebra y la cruz: Tres sones de Paixtles de Tuxpan, Jalisco.

Patty Harrington Delaney and Julie Brodie were commissioned to notate part of a dance for display on the exterior wall of the new Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble building in Denver, CO. The notation of Cleo Parker Robinson's Mary Don't You Weep was created by Delaney, and Brodie provided feedback on the score and transposed it into Adobe Illustrator for the architects. The detailed score and information about Labanotation will be provided via a QR code at the building site.
